Elementary
Elementary
An engaging, practical, and future-focused education
Elementary education at ISL is more than just the development of foundational literacy and mathematics skills. ISL Elementary education combines a comprehensive curriculum that blends the US Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the C3 (College, Career and Civic Life) Social Studies Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), STEM skills development, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Entrepreneurship to ensure that ISL students develop essential academic skills while fostering their innovation, global awareness, and social responsibility. This integrated approach prepares our students for future academic success, workforce readiness, and responsible citizenship in an interconnected world.
Following the ISL bilingual transition program, language instruction in Elementary aims to allow our students to build strong literacy skills in the language that is predominantly spoken in their living environment, which is French, while laying the foundations of another language (English).

Curriculum overview
French Language art / English Language Arts
Literacy is at the heart of all learning, and ISL emphasizes engaging with literary and informational texts, developing structured writing, honing research skills, and perfecting presentation abilities, while encouraging discussions, debates, and collaboration.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction follows a conceptual progression from foundational numeracy to complex problem-solving; we aim to develop fluency in basic arithmetic, fractions, and decimals. Students learn to recognize patterns and relationships between numbers with the exploration of shapes, area, perimeter. They develop spatial reasoning and learn how to interpret graphs, statistics, and real-world data.
Science
ISL emphasizes inquiry-based learning, experimentation, and real-world application. The key focus areas of science include:
-Physical Science: Energy, motion, matter, and forces.
– Life Science: Ecosystems, plant and animal life, human biology.
-Earth & Space Science: Climate, weather, space exploration, and environmental sustainability.
-Engineering & Technology Integration: Encouraging problem-solving through design thinking and experimentation.
Social Studies
The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework promotes inquiry-based learning and civic engagement. ISL students understand rights, responsibilities, and democratic principles through citizenship. They explore human-environment interactions and global interdependence through geography, and analyze past events and their influence on the present in history.
STEM and Entrepreneurship
STEM education encourages students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technological skills. ISL teaches programming and logical reasoning by encouraging creativity through hands-on building projects. Entrepreneurial education empowers students with skills such as idea generation, problem-solving and financial literacy.
Project-Based Learning (PBL)
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach in education where learning happens through engaging, real-world projects. This method integrates multiple subjects, encourages collaboration, and develops problem-solving skills.
The ISL Elementary Division equips our students with the skills they need to think critically, innovate, and contribute to a better world.
